The CLIC Research Presentation will share the learning improvement of three Rice in Country programs in Summer 2018, which are Rice in Argentina, Rice in Japan, and Rice in Korea. The learning outcomes were assessed with two oral tests, one before the trip (the pretest) and the other at the end of the trip (the posttest). Students were paired with their peer and asked to perform two test tasks (roleplays and paired-discussion) at each oral test. All the test performances were video-recorded, randomized, and graded by native-speaking raters. The analysis indicates that students did significantly better at the posttest than at the pretest (p < 0.5), regarding their total scores and sub-scores of five categories. During the discussion of the overall results, we will discuss limitations of the study's methodological design, potential modifications to the assessment procedures, and identify critical components of a study abroad experience.
