Rice offers courses in nine languages. Language courses focus on the development of interactional competence in the target language. Courses are based on a student-centered, critical thinking approach to language analysis and acquisition.
French, German, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish are offered through the Department of Modern and Classical Languages, Literatures, and Cultures. Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean are offered through the Department of Transnational Asian Studies.
