CLIC Language Study Award

(for non-Rice in Country programs)

Applications for 2024 will be open from November 13, 2023 - March 1, 2024.


Up to $3,000


  • Have taken at least 2 courses in the target language at CLIC by the time of the program*.
  • Preference is given to students who have A or B grades in the language courses previously taken and an overall GPA of at least 3.00.
  • Apply to a study abroad program, lasting from six weeks up to one year, approved by CLIC. 
  • These are competitive awards and priority will be given to students who are pursuing the language certificate. 

*Applicants who are interested in pursuing a study abroad program sponsored by The Department of Modern and Classical Literatures and Cultures (MCLC) or Transnational Asian Studies (TAS) are exempt from this requirement. Preference will be given to students who intend to continue their language/culture study with CLIC, MCLC, or TAS upon their return to campus

Not all programs approved by the Study Abroad Office will be automatically qualified for this award, as the focus should be on language acquisition. Please talk with the Study Abroad Office advisors and the CLIC advisor, Dr. Hossam Elsherbiny, to identify an appropriate program.
