Rice in Country Overview
We offer Rice in Country, Rice faculty-led summer study abroad programs. Students earn 6 credits in 6 weeks through a combination of coursework, homestay, community engagement, cultural excursions, and interaction with local language partners. Rice in Country programs fulfill the experiential learning requirement for the Certificate in Language and Intercultural Communication.
Due the ongoing health and safety concerns related to COVID-19, the Dean of Undergraduates, in consultation with the Provost and Rice's Crisis Management Advisory Committee has made the difficult decision to extend the suspension of study abroad through the Summer 2021 term, this includes the cancellation of Rice in Country programs.
The decision, in line with current DOS and CDC travel advisories, is based on several factors, with health and safety being the top priorities. Due to the unpredictable trajectory of the pandemic and the resulting impact on host countries, various country-specific entry restrictions, including quarantine requirements and the difficulty of securing visas, as well as the challenges and slow rate of vaccination roll-out globally, non-essential travel is not advised. Under these the circumstances, a study abroad experience in Summer 2021 would be quite different from ideal, with social distancing, restricted mobility, and decreased opportunity for personal exploration and engagement with the local community. In addition, with the recent implementation of the COVID-19 testing requirement for entry into the U.S., students could potentially face a delayed return at the end of their program, which can be logistically difficult and financially costly.
We are looking forward to the summer of 2022 and hope to launch new programs for additional languages! We are currently planning programs in Costa Rica, Egypts, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Korea, Portugal, Spain, and Taiwan. Watch the videos to find out about past programs.
